- A complete Google Business Profile is the single biggest local SEO win for Durban businesses.
- Steady reviews, consistent business details and a page per service help you rank in the map results.
- Expect clear results after a few months, and track calls and enquiries, not just rankings.
When someone in Westville searches for an electrician, Google shows three businesses on a map before any normal results. Those three spots get a huge share of the calls. Local SEO is the work of getting your business into them, and into the results below.
The good news is that a lot of it is free and doesn't need technical skills. Work through this list in order.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important thing for local search. If you haven't claimed your profile yet, do it first. Then fill in every section:
- Primary category: pick the most specific one that fits, such as "Emergency plumber" rather than just "Plumber" if that's your main work.
- Secondary categories: add the other services you offer.
- Service areas: if you go to customers, list the suburbs you cover, like Umhlanga, Durban North and Morningside.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including public holidays.
- Services and products: list them with short descriptions.
- Photos: real photos of your work, team, vehicles and premises. Not stock images.
2. Get reviews, steadily
Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people click. The trick is consistency. Twenty reviews in one week and then nothing for a year looks odd. A few every month looks like a busy, real business.
Make it easy: send happy customers a direct link to your review form by WhatsApp straight after the job. And reply to every review, including the bad ones. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint often impresses people more than a row of five stars.
3. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, your Google profile, Facebook and every directory. If one listing says "Shop 4, 12 Smith St" and another says "12 Smith Street", Google is less sure they're the same business.
4. List your business in local directories
South African directories such as Brabys and Cylex, plus any industry associations you belong to, give Google more signals that you're real and local. Don't go overboard with hundreds of low-quality sites. A handful of good ones is enough.
5. Make your website clearly local
Google needs to understand where you work. Your website should:
- Mention Durban and the suburbs you serve in page titles and headings, where it reads naturally.
- Show your address or service area on the contact page.
- Include an embedded Google Map.
- Have a separate page for each main service, not one page listing everything.
If you serve several areas, a page for each major area can help, but only if each one has genuinely useful, different content. Copying the same page and swapping the suburb name doesn't work and can hurt you.
6. Fix the technical basics
You don't need to be technical, but someone should check that:
- The site loads quickly on a phone.
- Every page has a unique title and description.
- The site has an SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser).
- The site is connected to Google Search Console, so you can see errors and searches.
7. Post updates and answer questions
Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers and events. A short post every week or two keeps the profile active. Check the Questions section too. If customers keep asking the same thing, answer it there and on your website.
8. Be patient, and measure
Local SEO usually takes a few months to show clear results. Track a few numbers every month: calls and direction requests from your Google profile, website visits from Google, and the enquiries you actually receive.
